Close a Permit

Learn how to complete the permit close-out process. This guide explains the typical workflow for updating permit status, ending work activities, and completing final close-out process.

How do permits usually work?

  • Submit: the permit request is created (often by a foreman).

  • Approve: the GC/site host approves it.

  • Open: work starts under the approved permit.

  • On Hold: work pauses or ends for the shift.

  • Closed: the permit is fully closed out (often by the GC/site host).

Before you end the permit, confirm:

  • You’re in the correct job site in the app.

  • You’re working on the correct permit for the scope of work.

  • The right crew is added (if the permit requires crew selection/signatures).

  • Any required end-of-work items are ready (photos, checks, answers, signatures).

Most common steps:

Put the permit “On Hold"

  • On many job sites, foremen are responsible for moving the permit to On hold when work is done for the shift.

If you have a “Close” option

  • Some job sites allow foremen to fully close a permit.

If the GC/site host needs to close the permit

  • Put the permit on-hold status when you’re done.

  • Notify the GC/site team it’s ready for close-out (especially if they require a final inspection).

Common issues

I can’t find the permit

  • Confirm you’re on the correct jobsite.

  • Confirm the permit was approved (some sites hide unapproved permits from foremen/workers).

The permit won’t let me move to On hold or Close

Common causes

  • Required questions weren’t completed

  • Required signatures weren’t captured

  • The permit isn’t in the right status (not approved/open)

The app isn’t working, and I need to end work

  • Notify the GC/site team right away.

  • Follow their job site process for documenting stop/close-out (they may ask for photos or a written confirmation).

Why this matters

Moving a permit to On hold or Closed creates a timestamped record that:

  • Work stopped safely

  • Close-out checks were completed

  • The GC can audit and report on permit compliance

Need help?

If you’re unsure whether to use On hold vs Close, ask the GC/site safety team. Different job sites enforce different permit rules.
