Choose the Right Visitor Type and Subcontractor Company
Selecting the correct Visitor Type and Subcontractor Company during the orientation process ensures you receive the appropriate site requirements while helping maintain accurate project records.
Quick Definition
Visitor Type tells Breadcrumb what kind of personnel you are on this jobsite (for example: General Contractor Employee, Subcontractor, or Visitor). This is selected at the initial orientation process, upon scanning the QR code poster when you arrive on site for the first time.
Subcontractor Company is the company you work for on this jobsite. This is also selected during the initial orientation process, the first time you scan the QR poster.
Why it matters
1) You get the right orientation and site requirements
Many job sites show different steps depending on what visitor type you select.
- Subcontractors may be asked to complete subcontractor-specific steps (like acknowledging site specific safety plans submitted by their company).
- General Contractor Employees may be asked to complete employee requirements.
- Visitors may have a simpler sign-in flow.
If you pick the wrong option, you may:
- Miss a required step
- Be asked to do extra steps that don’t apply
- Get blocked from checking in
2) The right company gets credit for who’s on site
The jobsite team uses Breadcrumb to understand who is on site and which companies are working.
If you select the wrong company, it can affect:
- Attendance reports
- Emergency and evacuation roll calls
- Labor and compliance reporting
3) Documents and sign-offs stay organized
-
Some safety documents and permits are tied to the company doing the work.
-
Choosing the correct company helps ensure your document sign-offs and records are filed the right way.
How to choose the right Visitor Type: Use these guidelines (your jobsite may be different — always follow your site team’s instructions)
-
Employee: You work directly for the GC / project team running the site.
-
Subcontractor: You work for a trade partner or specialty contractor on the job.
-
Visitor: You’re on site temporarily (delivery, inspection, owner rep, etc.) and not performing subcontracted work.
How to choose the right Subcontractor Company
-
Pick the company that appears on your hard hat, paycheck, or onboarding instructions.
-
If your company has multiple names, ask your foreman or site team which one to use.
-
If you can’t find your company in the list, don’t guess. Notify the site team.
Common Mistakes (and what to do)
“My company isn’t listed”
-
Ask your foreman or the site team to add the company (or confirm the correct company name).
“I picked the wrong Visitor Type or company”
- If you haven’t finished submitting your orientation yet, go back and select the correct option before completing it and checking-in.
- If you already submitted your orientation and checked in, your visitor type can be changed by the General Contractor. Ask the site team to help correct it so your records and sign-ins are attributed properly.
Need help?
If you’re unsure which options to choose, ask your foreman or site safety team — it’s always better to confirm than to guess.
